The park has a wide variety of interesting flora, fauna and wildlife including badgers, foxes, squirrels and deer. There is also a large variety of mature trees including oak, ash, hornbeam, and field maple, an additional 25,000 new trees were planted in 2005/6.

Please remember that Hylands Park belongs to the people of Chelmsford, we are very fortunate to be allowed to use the park for this event and we would like to return year after year.

Hylands Park is in the parish of Writtle approximately 2 miles outside of Chelmsford on the A414. If you are arriving on foot, please follow the signs from Chelmsford to the V Festival site and use gate 6 or 1. Unless you are camping in Yellow campsite then please follow the signs worded YELLOW from Gate 1.

The V Festival is an annual music festival held in England during the penultimate weekend in August. Organised by SJM Concerts, the event is held at two parks simultaneously which share the same bill; artists perform at one location on Saturday and then swap on Sunday. The sites are currently located at Hylands Park in Chelmsford and Weston Park in South Staffordshire. Although predominantly a rock music festival, a wide range of musicial genres are accepted; in recent years pop acts have become ever more common.

The “V” represents the Virgin Group, with the event being sponsored by Virgin Media and televised on Channel 4 and 4 Music.

We present 14 top tips to help protect you are thoroughly prepared for a incredible weekend.

1. Do not forget your ticket

Seriously, don’t! Duplicate tickets will not be issued under any circumstances. You eill need your car park ticket for Hylands too and your V Festival Information Booklet will also come in very handy – you should receive one along with your ticket.

2. Plan your travel

The official V Festival website has all the lowdown on how to get to Hylands Park, Chelmsford and Weston Park, Stafford. Take a minute to work out your route so that you do not waste valuable V Festival time getting lost on the way.

3. Fancy a drink?

Be aware that V Festival operates a token system in its bars.

You can buy your tokens from the token booths in the arena and then use them at any bar, other than the Bacardi Bar.

Tokens bought for Friday and Saturday can still be used on Sunday but refunds are only given on the day of purchase from the designated token booths during the last hour that the bars are trading.

4. Do not get dehydrated

You can buy bottled water on site, but there will be standpipes containing drinking water in the campsites and the arena. Bring with you some plastic containers that you can refill.

5. No glass policy

V Festival operates a strict policy – no glass. Any found will be seizured.

That does not mean you can not bring alcohol or soft drinks into the campsite – just make sure it comes in plastic, foil or cardboard containers.

6. Holes in the wall

Do not worry too much, if you run out of money. You will find cash machines in the arena but be prepared to queue – they are bound to get busy, indeed.

7. Erm, toilets

Commonly the most terrible part of any festival, but V Festival’s toilets are emptied and cleaned throughout the weekend.

If we all make an exertion to keep them as clean as possible, everyone’s a winner. However long the queues get, please do not be tempted to go for a wee in the surrounding woods.

Get caught and you will be drive out instantly.

8. Take a shower

You do not get this at Glastonbury! V Festival has warm water showers in the campsites so you can wash off all that festival dirt. As you had await, the queues can get long first thing in the morning.

9. Do not bring expensive stuff

V Festival has a very good safety record but thieves will always find a way – so it is better to leave anything of value at home.

There will be a lock-up easily at the Welfare Tent that you can use, but it is better to carry things like mobile phones, money, cameras, credit cards and so on with you at all times.

10. Be prepared for the weather

Of course, this being England, it could be hailing one minute and bright sunshine the next so try to prepare for every eventuality.

Bring along both a waterproof jacket and light summer clothes, both boots and sandals/flip-flops, both a woolly hat and a sun hat, and so on – then you can enjoy V Festival, whatever the weather may bring.

11. No starting fires!

As much as lighting a little fire at night might feel cosy, local fire regulations do not permit fires anywhere on the V handy Festival site.

If you do get a fire going, it will be put out by some very disgruntled stewards or even the Fire Service… so best not do it.

12. Make a shopping list

You do not want to be sat frying in the heat, wishing you had remembered the suntan lotion. So, make a shopping list and get in some essentials: sunscreen and suntan lotion, toilet roll, wet wipes, disposable camera… that should get you started.

13. Leave your tent unitdy

As much as you might be a stickler for tidiness, leaving your tent in an unitdy mess in fact discourages thieves: it takes them too much time to find everything worth stealing.

Do not make it easy for them by leaving a bag in your tent with everything in it. When you go to sleep (if you go..) , hide all expensive things carefully and do not put everything together.

14. A few final no-nos

It’s much better to know early, so… no pets are allowed, except guide dogs for the blind and deaf – nor are candles, air horns, fireworks and anything that could be interpreted as a weapon.

Weston Park
On the A5 in Weston-under-Lizard, 30 minutes from central Birmingham. The nearest rail stations are Stafford and Wolverhampton or Telford in Shropshire.

By Car From M6 Southbound off at J12 then A5 Westbound for 10 miles to the V Festival

From M6 Northbound off at J10a then M54 to J3 to the V Festival.

From South Wales M4 to A449 then A40 to M50, M5, M6 North as above.

From North East M1 to J28, then A38 to A5 Westbound to the V Festival.

From South East M40, M5, M6 Northbound as above or M1, M6 as above.

There will be road signs as you approach the V Festival site to bring you in the most convenient entrance.

Opening Times
Weston Park: For day ticket holders at both locations, the Arena opens 12noon on Saturday and Sunday and close at 11pm when the last bands finish

Camping Information
Weston Park: The campsites open at 10am on Friday 21st August and close on Monday 24th August at noon. The arena will open at 12noon on Saturday and Sunday and the bands will finish at 11pm. Sleeping in vehicles in the car parks is not permitted.

History of V Music Festival:
The idea for V Music Festival came in 1996 when Pulp’s front man Jarvis Cocker announced he would love to play two outdoor venues in two days. Pulp’s promoters got together and came up with the idea of putting the gig into Victoria Park Warrington and Hylands Park Chelmsford giving fans in both the North and South a chance to see the band. Then came the idea of adding more bands to the bill, putting on a second stage and letting people camp for the weekend. In the end Victoria Park was just too small for two stages and camping. So in August 1996 there was one day of artists in Victoria Park and two days at Hylands Park with camping. The northern leg of V97 was switched to Temple Newsam, Leeds to provide room for camping and three stages. In 1999 the Northern leg of the festival was moved to Weston Park in Staffordshire and has remained there since.

Previously it had been held at Temple Newsam in Leeds, before being replaced by Carling’s Leeds Festival. Originally, the festival took the name of the current year, with the first festival being named “V96″. Since 2003 it has been known as simply the V Music Festival. Its weekend format, low queuing times and professional organisation have given it a loyal audience. The festival sold out in record time in 2006.

Mel C, Dido, and N.E.R.D. have all performed at the festival, and both Razorlight and Faithless performed in 2006. V showcases a mix of British and international musicians, from up-and-coming bands such as Coldplay in 2000 and the Kaiser Chiefs in 2003 and 2008, and glam rockers El Presidente in 2005, to veteran crooner Tony Christie. Girls Aloud also performed at the 2006 show, and received rave reviews for their performance. McFly performed at the festival in 2007 and received a huge turnout and great reviews that were not expected.

The 11th V Festival took place on Saturday 19 August and Sunday 20 August.

Tickets for the festival went on sale on Monday 27 February, exclusively to Virgin Mobile customers, and went on general sale on Friday 3 March.

There were complaints from festival-goers in 2006 due to the excessive price of food and merchandise, and lack of prior information about the band schedules, the only timetable available being a programme sold at the festival. Despite knowing the numbers attending, the print run of programmes was sold out.[1]
